1st July update
Blithfield 2007/2008 Event details

After discussions with the management of Blithfield it was agreed that sea deadbaits could be used at this years events.
Full details can be found in the current News letter which can be found here
I think most people who fish Blithfield would agree that the past few years have been difficult so hopefully this new rule will give people a better chance of that fish of a lifetime!

Changes to the Comittee
Due to the fact that I have to work a permanent Nightshift and cannot attend any meetings for the foreseeable future I've decided to stand down as secretary. This will now be the job of Kevin Dunne. Most members will know Kev who is a regular at the meetings. I'm sure everyone will join me in wishing Kev well in his new post.
22nd April2007 update
Website news?
I guess for most people their piking gear will be put away until the autumn. It's been a quite period over the last few months with no news of any catches or photos to put on the website.
Most people I've spoken to have struggled during the latter part of the season. Blithfield for many was disappointing this time although I did see and was told of one or two people who had caught pike over the 20lb mark but I don't have any photo's or further info on these.
To update the website I really do need some material to put on it!
May meeting

There will be a members meeting and a 'bring and buy' sale on the 1st of May, same place, same time.

28th January 2007 update
Blithfield re-organised weekend
After two cancelled weekends the 2nd of the four weekend event took place on January the 20th/21st.
The best fish came to Dave Greenwood, a superb 30lber' on his first year on the reservoir. Well done that man. The conditions were not ideal though due to the high winds especially on the Saturday. The next two weekends are arranged for 3/4 and 24/25 of February.

Our guest speaker for the February meeting (tuesday the 6th) is Lee Norbury and the talk is about fishing from his
home (a boat!) on a local marina between 1996 and 2000. He caught 27 "20's" before moving
to another marina which is also now producing some great fishing........Sounds interesting!

9th November 2006 update
Blithfield opening weekend
The first weekend was rather disappointing with many boats registering blank days however there were a few exceptions. Derbyshire member Mick Crisp had a very good opening day boating two 26lb+ pike, two sizable doubles and a jack. Leigh angler Steve Plant also did well with a couple, including a nice 20lber. A couple of other 20lb plus pike were caught which I don't have any details of at the moment.
There does seem that there is still a lot of trout in the reservoir at present for lure anglers to compete with and quite a few were caught, one a lovely marked 4lb Brownie which took a liking to my spoon. When the pike's food supply dwindles later on in the year then hopefully we shall see much better results.
Rutland, Rudyard and Blithfield

Busy work commitments have meant that I haven't been able to update this section for a while, apologies for that.
The traditional pike season has started now and a few reports of decent catches have been coming in. Yours truly has managed fish of 12lb 14lb 18lb and 21lb and a couple of smaller fish from Rutland over the last couple of weeks and a couple of good doubles from a large Welsh water, so things are looking up after a dire last season!
PS, Rutland is still open to pike anglers for the next couple of weeks.

Indications are that Rudyard could be on the comeback. The reservoir has seen an explosion of small fish, mainly roach an perch, and this should reflect in the weights of pike that are caught.

The picture on the right is of a 25-8oz beast caught on the 3rd of October to this angler on a spinner. It has a huge head and tail and this fish could easily touch 30lb later on in the year!

Finally Blithfield fishing is nearly upon us. The club extends a warm welcome to all new members and the best of luck to all who are fishing it this year.
I'm informed that the reservoir is full this year and several huge fish have been seen by trout anglers

New Gallery and Calendar added

The Photo gallery has changed. It can be viewed with thumbnails from the index page which opens up a large image or you can view the whole gallery as a slideshow. The appearance I think looks better and it saves me a lot of work editing the pictures that are sent in. Hope you like it!

Au revoir to Eric
After three years in the job Eric has sadly decided to stand down as Secretary of the club. I think that I can speak for all of the members in thanking Eric for his time and commitment he has devoted to the club.
23rd January 2006 update
January Pike
Some new photos sent to me this month by members. Pictured below left is Eric Edwards with a fine Lake District 22-14oz. Same trip produced a nice 18-8oz for Denis Bird (centre) and on the right, Mark Lucas with a Rudyard Lake 22lber. Well done to all!
Aqualate mere, syndicate places available!

Just in! Pictured left is John McDermott with a new personal best weighing in at 24lb from Aqualate mere which is a private Staffordshire lake, splendid!

This shallow mere near Newport in Shropshire is around 100 acres and has long been noted for it's large pike which have been caught in the past at weights in excess of 30lb.
It also holds large shoals of bream and roach. Carp are present also in small numbers. The water is best fished by a boat and the syndicate have boats available for members.
There may be some places for people who wish to join the Aqualate syndicate.
For further details please contact Mick bates on 01782 815447 or John
Sargent on 01782 750000.

18th January 2006 update
Stanley Pool
Stanley Reservoir or locally named Stanley Pool is now, once again, controlled by Stoke-On-Trent Angling Society. The club leased the water for many years until high leasing charges forced the club to let the water go a few years ago.
Anyone who is familiar with this water will know of the superb pike fishing that the reservoir has been famous for in the past. Indeed it is mentioned in Neville Fickling's book - Mammoth Pike on two occasions.
Unfortunately recently with the free fishing on offer it has led to the presence of quite a few less experienced anglers without adequate tackle and there has been reports of a few pike fatalities. Still nevertheless, there still remains some decent piking with reports of specimens to 26lb plus, and Perch to over 3lb
John Davey (Chairman, SOTAS) informs me that, with committee approval, he hopes that there will be a traditional piking season on the water running from October to March, which would give the water a rest, piking wise. Applications for membership can be found Here
4th January 2006 update
Rob Christen and Dave Greenwood talks.

I think I can safely say that both speakers were great entertainment and were enjoyed by all in attendance. Firstly, in December Rob showed us many photo's of his captures from the Fenland drains icluding his 'monster' 39lber which I personally had not seen before, simply awesome!
Dave is better known as a lure angler that has had tremendous success on Northern rivers in England. Dave came along for our first meeting of the year and his photo's were equally very impressive. So well done to both.

Club boat now on Rudyard

The club have purchased a boat from the now defunct Tittensworth trout angling club. The boat will be available to members only for use on Rudyard lake, Nr Leek, Staffs. However you will need to pre-book by contacting John at the lake in office hours on 01538 306280. Please note that you will need to bring along your own electric motor (petrol outboards are not allowed) Please look after it and remove any litter, baits etc after use.

Website
The website will be moving in the near future to a different host so this may mean that the website will be offline for a short while.
2nd November update
Dave Mellor floats

Pictured left are a selection of huge wooden deadbait pencils that are hand made by member Dave Mellor. They are around 12" long and unweighted.
The quality and finish of these floats are superb. They are larger than most floats of this kind and this makes them ideal for distance fishing on large waters. You just can't buy these sort of big pencils of this quality over the counter. The large flourecent tips are highly visable in low light and they are very sensitive.
He also does a selection of sliders.
Dave is at most monthly meetings if you would like to enquire about them.
Lure Sale

John Davey brought along a large selection of lures that he is selling for his son, Phil. A fair few were sold on the night but he still has a fairly large selection of quality lures for sale, jerkbaits, crankbaits, spinnerbaits etc. I managed to get a couple of Jakes for a fiver each. These lures would cost £30 each normally so I'm not grumbling!
Contact John as soon as possible if you want a bargain because he will be putting the rest on ebay if they are not sold.

28th October update

Dates for your diary

You may have read in the newsletter already that we are pleased to announce that we have a couple of very talented pike anglers who are coming to give us digital slide shows. Rob Christen you may recall was the capture of that massive 39lb fenland pike last year and Machester piker Dave Greenwood who is held in high regard for his catches. Rob will be with us on the 6th of December and Dave will be along on the 3rd of January.
If anyone is wondering what a digital slide show is, it is basically a way of showing printed photographs on a screen with the help of computer software. Clever stuff.
The November meeting will be a bit different. Phil Davey, the son of John Davey but much better looking, has decided to sell his huge lure selection. (hope he doesn't live to regret it!) and the sale of the century will take place on the 1st.
Blithfield part 2
The second of the two October days passed off rather quitely with only a couple of 20s caught. Kevin Dunne doing well by taking one at 21lb. My boat partner for the day Graham Davies took his best pike from the venue to date at 17-4oz so well done to him.
Again the water was very low and the weather very mild for mid-October. There does still seem to be a lot of trout in there which could account for the absence of the bigger pike.
08th October update

Blthfield.

The first of the two extra days fishing took place on the 1st of October. The boats were launched in two phases to avoid a potential collision in the mad scramble to get to a favoured fishing mark and this seemed to work well.
The weather was breezy and fairly mild and the reservoir was down in water by several feet from last seasons winter levels. Reported results were poor and only one unconfirmed pike was caught over 20lb (20lb-2oz) The weather and the stocking of the reservoir with trout a few days earlier probably did not help matters.
The weather continues to remain mild this week and with plenty of trout remaining in the reservoir the prospects for the 2nd of the extra days fishing are uncertain but let's hope things improve by next week-end.
Pike Flies
Member Ernie Frith is a dedicated fly angler for pike and has a selection of pike flies for sale. As soon as he sends me soom photo's of them I'll publish them here. These are top quality flies and if you are interested contact me and Ill pass it on to Ernie.
19th August update

Some people have been enjoying themselves fishing this summer and below are some photos sent to me.

Pictured right:
Gary Knowles with over 100lb of Tarpon caught on a LURE. Took a timed 68 minutes to land in 100 degrees heat from Tampa Bay in Florida.

Below left:
Ernie Frith having some fun on a Loch catching his first Scottish caught pike on the fly.

Below middle:
Kevin Dunne with a personal best Barbel of 12-01oz from a Northern river. The same river has also produced a PB to Denis Bird with a Barbel of 11-4oz Eric Edwards also took a fish of the same weight.

so well done to all!
